I dream
of hands in jeans too tight to sit
tee shirts rolled and airplane kits
too cool to speak when she walks by
and full of wonder when you ask why
she did not stop and talk a bit.
TEEN
I dream
of cotton puffs beneath azure blue
that draws the eye to stir anew
the wonder of those lazy days
spent wandering in mindless haze
not knowing what to do.
YOUTH
I dream
of screams and shattered limbs,
carried high by mongrel winds
to crest and froth the shortest time
ever spent to ape and mime
the terror of our sins.
VIET NAM
I dream
of boredom hot and dry
boring holes within a sky
so devoid of any light
it sucks your soul into the night
and God cannot find where you lie
NIGHT PATROL
I dream
of mayday calls so calm
they give the lie to rattling guns
redlined engines screaming heat
crewmen leaning out to beat
the tracers knifing through the air
SEARCH & RESCUE
I dream
of pilots steppin out
above triple canopy jungle about
to become a resting place,
short the prayers, seeking grace
to forgive - we cannot get them out
SEARCH & RESCUE
I dream
of floodlights bright and faces taut
cheated time and death near bought
breathe their air and taste their food
fingers slipping in their blood
and curse because they cannot hear.
HEAD ON - EMS
I dream
of storms that rage and tear
at flight decks hoisted in the air
ninety feet above the brine
that brings its death before our time
and never mourns or seems to care.
DEEP WATER TYPHOON
I dream
of fighting ships that plunge below
the pounding waves where Neptune goes
then bobs to surface once again
to shake and toss its dripping mane
ready again in fearless pose.
DEEP WATER TYPHOON
I dream
of knowledge gained in pain
when those among us proud and vain
run down a twisted path and say
they would not listen anyway
but trip and fall just the same.
